How to obtain the Mexico Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit

The most important things needed for legally getting you and your motorcycle into México are:

  • Valid Passport (valid until 90 days after you enter Mexico)

  • Valid Motorcycle Vehicle Registration in your name (same name as in passport)

  • Visa/MasterCard in the same name as your passport with credit or debit availability of approx $600

  • Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (to be obtained online via Banjercito (see below)

  • $4.00 USD cash to cross the bridge from U.S. to Mexico

Here is how to apply for your Temporary Vehicle Permit Online

Step 1: Get the Folio INM Pre-authorization

Step 2: Fill out Vehicle Permit Form on Banjercito. You will need the info from the Folia form to complete this.

  • You need to upload clear images of your passport and motorcycle title (or current registration form) (format: PDF, 1 MB max)

  • You need to submit payment with a credit card listed in your name. The cost for the TIP is about $50 but the card will also be charged for a deposit of $500. This deposit will be returned to your card when you close your TIP at time of Mexico exit.

  • Pay the vehicle permit and deposit.

  • You will be prompted to enter your mailing address, however, the permit should be emailed to you within 10 days. Make sure you enter your correct email address.

  • Entry date: at your discretion

  • Port of Entry: at your discretion

The Immigration Pre-Authorization form is only valid for the online temporary permit application. Once you get your TIP, you will still need to make a quick stop at the border to get your visa from Mexico immigration.
